21 Facts You May Not Know About Europe

Europe is a great place for any traveller to visit.  With so many countries, all unique in their own way there is something to appeal to everyone.  I have spent a summer traveling through Europe and loved every second of it. People often ask me my favourite country or city but there is no way I can choose!

Europe has an extensive rail system so it is relatively easy to get around between countries and take them all in. You can buy various European rail passes so it doesn’t necessarily work out to be overly expensive either which is great if you are on a budget. You can also drive yourself but if that is your plan, you might want to check out this post on multi-country car rental before you take the plunge.

You have probably read quite a bit about Europe already but did you know:

  • In France it is illegal to name a pig Napoleon?!
  • Netflix is unavailable in many European countries. Did you have visions of yourself sitting in a quaint café catching up on your favourite show on your laptop? Don’t worry, you still can but make sure you download a VPN before you visit so you can still tune in!
  • In Finland they hold an annual wife carrying contest. They compete to see who can carry their wife the fastest and the farthest. The Finns aren’t totally crazy though, this contest also happens in Maine in the USA too.

  1. Hahaha, yes! Ikea 😀
And we’re all beneath sea level almost, it’s true 🙂 But you don’t notice it 😀 I do always feel stunned by how actually flat my country is when I return from traveling 🙂
    Cool facts!

  2. These are some really interesting and fun facts! Smashing pottery at weddings is actually common in Slovakia, too. Btw, I also have an Ikea bed! 🙂
